Sometimes nothing happens—and everything happens.
Yesterday, I came around a blind turn while driving and found a line of stopped vehicles directly in front of me. I slammed on my brakes, and my brakes gave out.
I swerved into the oncoming lane.
There were no cars coming.
I found a driveway with a slight uphill incline, pulled into it, and eventually came to a stop.
There wasn’t a scratch on me or my truck.
From the outside, you could almost say nothing happened.
But my body had just experienced something very different.
For several terrifying moments, my system was responding to an immediate threat. There was no time for reflection or reasoning. There was simply survival.
And afterward, I found myself thinking about something I teach through Rebel Alchemy:
An experience doesn’t have to leave a physical wound to leave an imprint.
When the Danger Is Over but Your Body Is Still Responding
After frightening or overwhelming experiences, we often minimize what happened because of the outcome.
“But I’m okay.”
“Nothing actually happened.”
“It could have been so much worse.”
All of those things may be true.
But they don’t erase the moments when your body believed you were in danger.
Our nervous systems can respond to perceived threat before our conscious minds have time to make sense of what is happening. Afterward, some people naturally settle back into equilibrium. Others may notice lingering fear, tension, intrusive memories, hypervigilance, difficulty sleeping, numbness, or other responses.
These experiences deserve care rather than judgment.
The Shamanic Understanding of Soul Loss
Within many shamanic frameworks, overwhelming experiences are sometimes understood through the concept of soul loss.
Rather than thinking about this literally, you might imagine it as a loss of connection with some part of yourself following shock, grief, fear, abuse, loss, or another overwhelming experience.
You may feel less present.
Less alive.
Less connected to yourself.
You may feel as though part of you is still living inside something that has already ended.
Soul retrieval is a shamanic practice intended to help restore that sense of connection and wholeness.
For me, after yesterday’s experience, journeying is one way I can spiritually tend to what happened rather than simply pushing forward because I wasn’t physically injured.
I can journey and ask:
Did anything become fragmented during that experience?
Is there something that needs to return?
Is there fear or energy that isn’t meant to continue with me?
What does my system need now?
Healing Doesn’t Mean Pretending It Didn’t Affect You
There can be enormous pressure to be resilient.
But resilience isn’t necessarily saying, I’m fine, as quickly as possible.
Sometimes resilience looks like acknowledging:
That scared me.
My body went through something.
I need to give myself space to integrate it.
For me, that integration includes shamanic journeying, grounding, rest, connection with the land, listening to my body, and allowing whatever emotions arise to actually move.
And if symptoms following a frightening experience become persistent, intense, or disruptive, professional trauma-informed mental health support can be an important part of that care as well.
Spiritual practices and professional support don’t have to compete with one another.
They can be different doorways into healing.
Is Part of You Still Back There?
This experience has made me think about how many moments we carry without realizing we’re carrying them.
A car accident.
A breakup.
A betrayal.
A frightening diagnosis.
The death of someone we love.
A childhood experience.
A moment when everything suddenly felt unsafe.
The event ends.
Life continues.
But sometimes part of us doesn’t fully come with it.
And perhaps one of the most powerful questions we can ask after an overwhelming experience is:
Is any part of me still back there?
If the answer feels like yes, we don’t have to shame ourselves into moving forward.
We can turn toward that part.
We can listen.
We can create safety.
We can seek support.
And, within shamanic practice, we can journey with the intention of calling ourselves home.
Because surviving an experience is extraordinary.
But eventually, we also deserve to feel fully here again.
